Gretna go out with a bang

Hearts finished 8th. Enough said. Maybe I should give up on the Jambo and support Romanov’s other outfit FBK Kaunas. At least they win the league year in year out. But alas I’ve made my bed.

Another defeat, which frankly, sums up the season. But I’ve banged on about that in my other posts so I won’t dwell on that.

But as I said in my previous post “let’s hope Gretna go out with a bang” and of course they did because they were playing against Edinburgh’s best “pub team“. Gavin Skelton goal gave Gretna only their fifth win of the season.

The game was marred by the referees’ inability to keep his cards in his pockets. I mean it’s the final game of the season so why does the referee not just use his common sense. The season is over and there was as usual nothing to play for. However he insisted on sending Hearts rising star Gary Glen off for an off the ball incident. The game was played at an end of season pace that you would expect from a meaningless bottom six rubber.

We went with 4-4-2 but that all went to shreds when John Underhill decided to send off Glen after 26 minutes. But these things happen and you have to get on with it. The game itself offered very little in the way of excitement with Hearts best chance coming from Lithuanian substitute, Kestutis Ivaskevicius who forced a smart stop from the Black and Whites keeper Greg Fleming. It looked for all the world that it would end goal less until somewhat fittingly Gretna’s longest serving player popped up to give the borderer’s a final win.

So well done to them. If it is their last game they’ve gone out in style and to be honest I don’t begrudge them it.
